HISTORY
Founded in 1988, we developed vineyards mostly with Bordeaux varieties foreseeing the great potential of maritime climate and gravelly soils. By adhering to traditional winemaking methods and manual managements, Waimarama has grown to be an internationally acclaimed winery.
1988
Pioneering and Founding in Hawke's Bay
This winery's history has begun with developing vineyards near the coast of Hawke's Bay in New Zealand. In the early times, this land blessed with gravelly soils and maritime climate started to reveal its potential.
1998
Acquisition of "Waimarama" and Major Vineyard Reform
Father of the current owner Mr. Shigeru Sato acquired Waimarama. Recognizing potential of the land, he launched large-scale improvements of the vineyards focusing on plot-by-plot management and meticulous manual works. This established a solid foundation for producing high-quality wines primarily from Bordeaux varieties.
2002
Sustainable Agriculture and Formation of Philosophy
Respecting sustainable agricultural methods, we have committed to make major shifts to sustainable viticulture. Chemical intervention was minimized and regenerative soil managements were introduced. The vineyard practices were aimed to improve soundness of the vineyards, which established the philosophy forming the core of Waimarama today.
2012
International Recognition and Establishment of Style
Waimarama won a gold medal at international wine competition. Along with increased reputation in New Zealand, its winemaking was set to reflect characteristics of each vineyard lot. This year marked a milestone for Waimarama since its wine style was clearly defined by launching the current small-lot vinification system employing different winemaking methods for each plot.
2015
Participation of a French Winemaker and Further Advancement
Renowned French winemaker Ludwig Vannelon joined the company, bringing the skills and philosophy he had acquired in Bordeaux and further improving the precision of blending and the expression of texture. This marked a major turning point in the winery's rise to international stage.
